The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry

The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry

Synopsis:

This is a short story about Della Dillingham Young and her husband Jim, a poor couple who are very loving towards one another. Della only has $1.87 to buy a present for Jim and sells her most prized possession, her long brown hair to buy a watch chain for Jim. Jim sells his watch to buy combs for Della’s hair.

When they trade gifts, Jim finds out that Della sacrificed her hair in order to buy him a gift, and Jim sacrificed his watch to buy her a gift.

Review:

I enjoyed this story and loved the theme that love is more meaningful than material items.

“But in a last word to the wise of those days, let it be said that of all who give gifts these two were the wisest.”
