Stuart Little by E.B. White
This is a children’s fiction book about Stuart, a boy who looks like a mouse despite being a human child.
Synopsis:
Stuart Little is born to the Little family in New York City- Mr. Little, Mrs. Little, and their other son George, and their cat Snowbell who dislikes Stuart because he knows Stuart is part of the family and he cannot eat him.
He learns how to adapt in a human sized world and can be helpful to his parents and brother in performing household tasks because of his small size. One day, Mrs. Little discovers a yellow canary named Margalo half-frozen on their doorstep. She takes Margalo into their home for the winter, and Margalo and Stuart become friends. Stuart protects her from Snowbell, and Margalo saves Stuart when he gets trapped in a garbage bag and about to be disposed in the sea.
In the spring, after Margalo leaves the house, she continues visiting Stuart. However, after finding out that a neighborhood cat is going to eat her, she leaves and Stuart goes off on a journey to find her. He ends up in a town called Ames Crossing where he substitutes at a local school and meets a girl named Harriet Ames who is the same size as Stuart but looks like a human. He eventually leaves Ames Crossing and continues his journey to find Margalo.
Review:
I loved this book and found it to be a light-hearted read and loved the character of Stuart.
“When Mrs. Frederick C. Little’s second son arrived, everybody noticed that he was not much bigger than a mouse. The truth of the matter was, the baby looked very much like a mouse in every way. He was only about two inches high; and he had a mouse’s sharp nose, a mouse’s tail, a mouse’s whiskers, and the pleasant shy manner of a mouse.”
“Stuart was a great help to his parents and brother, and to his older brother George, because of his small size and because he could do things that a mouse can do and was agreeable about doing them.”
